Chilean Cuisine


There are many different foods in Chile. There is everything from beef to seafood and all kinds of fresh fruits and vegetables. For breakfast, most Chilean people have bread with a topping and tea or coffee. Since lunch is the main meal of the day, there will often be two main dishes served. One of these is often a salad with seafood.


Popular Dishes in Chile

Empanadas - This is a traditional food in Chile. They are small pies that have been filled with olives, onions and beef.

Humitas - This is a favorite of the Chilean people. Humitas are made of grated corn that is mixed with fried onions, salt, pepper and basil.

Cazuela de ave - This is a stew made of potatoes, rice, onions, green peppers and chicken.

Chilean salad - A salad made of coriander, olive oil, onion, tomato and occasionally chili peppers.

Barros Jarpa - A common Chilean sandwich that is made of melted cheese and ham.

Crudo - This is a common Chilean dish that carries strong German influences. Finely chopped raw beef is put into a piece of white bread and lemon juice is added with chopped onions.

Charquican - Stew that is made of potato and squash chunks. It has different types of vegetables such as tomato, corn and carrots.

Pantruca - A dumpling that is cut up to be added to soup or beef stock.

Pastel de choclo - Common dish found in Chile that is made up of ground corn and basil. This is them added to chicken or ground beef, onions, black olives and hard boiled eggs.
