Botswana Population is an important indicator on the social and economic growth of the country. In the year 2003, the population of Botswana was estimated at around 1,785,000 by the United Nations.

In 2003, supposedly four percent of the population of Botswana was above 65 years of age and 41 percent was below 15 years of age. The sex ratio of Botswana in that year was 96 males per 100 females. According to the estimation by the United Nation, the annual growth rate of population in the country from 2000-05 was 0.85 percent. The density of Botswana population in the year 2003 was three persons per square kilometer.

In the year 2001, the Population Reference Bureau estimated that 50% of its population lived in the urban areas. Gaborone, the capital of Botswana had a population of 2, 54,000 in that year. The United Nations projected that the urban population growth rate from 2000-05 was 2.2 percent.

Deadly diseases like AIDS have serious consequences on the population of Botswana. In the year 2001, 38.5% of the people in the age group of 15-49 were infected with HIV. This in fact results in high death rate, lowering the life expectancy in the country.
