Currency of Kiribati

03/08/2019

The currency used is Australian dollars, available in A$ 100,50,20,10,and 5. Mastercard and Visa credit cards are accepted which makes it easier to conduct financial transactions, though this may not be the case in outlying islands. The cost of a holiday/visit to Kiribati is higher than most other Pacific countries because nothing is produced on the islands so the cost of food and other items is more.

The Bank of Kiribati is the main bank on the island. All banks open from 0930 to 1500 hrs, Mondays to Fridays. The Bikenibeu branch of the Bank of Kiribati opens from 0900 to 1400hrs. ANZ Bank is the only international bank that operates in Kiribati.

Change your foreign currency in the capital Tarawa because outside of it you'll have a really tough time. Exchange transactions can take place at either the local hotels or at the Bank of Kiribati. Traveller’s cheques issued in A $ are the most widely accepted and easily converted into cash.
