The availability of flat land and the proximity to the Brunei River are the chief reasons for the development of Bandar Seri Begawan. The city was declared as the capital of Brunei in 1920.
Brunei is officially known as Brunei Darussalam. The word Darussalam literally means 'the Abode of Peace'. The Constitution identifies Islam as the official religion of Brunei.
