Culture of Niger

A traditionally Muslim society, the Nigerians were nomadic tribes that moved in the area along the Sahara trade routes. The tribes consist of fierce Tuaregs, shepherds and artisans and craftsmen. The craftsmen of the Niger make beautiful leather goods like saddles, camel bags, silver jewellery, talismans and metal tools and utensils. Particularly popular is the silver filigree cross Croix d'Agadez, a powerful protection against the 'evil eye'.
