The sound of the traditional drumbeats and horns accompany parades. Festivals commemorate events – it could be a war, a victory, a coronation, a birth ceremony, a successful harvest or a funeral. People participate without religious inhibition and every town and village comes to life during these festivals.

Primary among the festivals are New Year’s Day marked with riotous beach parties, Independence Day on 6 March marked by parades of school children and voluntary organisations, the Deer Hunt Festival on 1 May and the "Ashanti" tribal festival in November. Easter and Christmas is also marked with traditional gaiety.
